Identifying questions which ask for specific information

This is the part of the test in which you hear a question or statement from one speaker, followed by three responses from another speaker.

Many of the questions in this section are asking for specific information.

Ask yourself: What information is the speaker asking for?

Time: What time/When is your flight to London?

Location: Where is the regional sales conference being held?

Reason: Why did you ask Susan to write that e-mail?

Identity: Who is going to be the new Marketing Director?

Tip

Look out for Wh-question words such as: who, what, when, why, where. These words will help you decide what kind of information is being asked for.

Tip

Understanding the reason for a speaker’s question or comment will help you to respond in an appropriate way. If the speaker’s purpose is not clear, ask for clarification. “Did you ask where John is going, or when?”
